A storage pool allows you to configure multiple drives into a single storage unit or pool. So in my case where i have 4 harddrives, I can combine all into one storage unit. Great right? You dont need to worry what to install where or which drive has what. There is one limitation though, if you have bought a mix of soft and hard drives, you can not combine them into one unit.

SHR2 means 2 of those drives are allocated to redundancy. Some of the available capacity goes to synology operating system and apps. Have you checked the storage analyzer. Not sure where that is. In the Overview tab it says I have But in storage allocation it still says my Volume only has Does this change as it is verifying drives in the background? So, sorry for all the questions —— just trying to figure out what is going on and if I did something wrong when I set it up this morning….
Each one says 5. Perhaps my NAS needs. For what? Storage analyzer is an app you install to check the usage of your drives and Yes the some of your harddrive space will be locked for use but 2TB sounds a bit excessive.

A NAS vs. You configured it as a SAN. There is no ambiguity here. They are discrete things.
They think it is easier to sell this device as a NAS and they know their end users, so they slap whatever label on it that makes it easy to sell. And this isn't being pedantic, because it is trying to think of it as a NAS that causes the confusion.
If you know it is a SAN, that alone answers your questions. That's how important that clarification is, it tells you everything that you need to know. This is why IT is a field where misusing terms is a big deal, because those terms tell us almost everything we need to know to understand how things work in most cases.
If you were to use this as a NAS, you could easily have overlapping space that cryptoware could access, depending on configuration. But you don't, so nothing you read about NAS or file servers applies here. Only SAN information applies. You are grayed out because there are no unused volumes available to work with. Most likely all the slots have drives and they are all assigned to a volume.
If you have an external drive with eSATA capability you can create a new volume on it and move your stuff over. Then delete the original volume and recreate and move back. The last time my Synology did something like that I had to wipe it back to factory, update DSM to current and reload from source.
Other notes: eSata is recognized in storage manager and usb externals are not. A full backup to external usb drive is painfully slow and usually the restore craps out around the 2TB mark when the drive overheats. I have a special external drive in metal case, fan cooled with eSata for just such emergencies - like Foghorn Leghorn's numbered feathers. The Disk Group show is all used because it is like a RAID Array of a Server, the volume will show that is all used but on the operating system it will show the real space used on that volume.
Sorry Josh, just noticed the setup assistant thing. Please stop what you are doing and answer the following before proceeding! Are you referring to the Windows Synology Setup Assistant.
If so you want to stop using that immediately after you cleared the password and do everything else from the Web interface. Setup assistant is only for setting up a new unconfigured NAS.

Problem was NOT Cloudstation related. My problem was the Headless Crashplan install. Been running this config successfully for about 4 years. I dont use my Synology for anything other than a file server.
Recently started receiving emails from Crashplan that it had stopped backing up. CP would not restart, and noticed that free disk space had dropped to MB. This seemed odd to me, and decided to uninstall Crashplan. Took about 10 min to uninstall.Also I think they are hot-swappable but only one at a time?? Also any other things I should consider??
